Year 8 Having Positive Conversations

Year 8 is an exciting and important stage in your son’s development. During this time, boys experience significant physical, social and emotional changes. It is also common for them to begin to push boundaries and assert themselves as they start to form their adult identity and seek greater independence. You may notice your son distancing himself from the family unit as friendships and peer relationships become increasingly influential.

While this shift is normal and an essential part of growing up, it can sometimes create tension at home. Maintaining a positive relationship with your son during this stage is vital. Keeping lines of communication open can help reduce conflict, support his wellbeing, and strengthen his engagement with school.

Communication skills can be taught and, importantly, modelled by the adults in a young person’s life.

The Crowther Centre will host a workshop for Year 8 parents and their sons. During the session, we will share research on adolescent development, explore common communication challenges, and provide practical strategies to support positive and productive conversations at home.
